  •  Ninety-nine-year-old, fourth-generation family business committed to “rebuilding” Detroit
  • Company received $100,000 Motor City Match grant to assist with building showroom

Sept. 25, 2018 (Detroit) – Today, representatives from the Detroit Economic Growth Corporation’s (DEGC) Motor City Match Program and Mayor Mike Duggan joined Advance Plumbing and Heating Supply Co. owner, Jeff Moss, his family, and a host of supporters in a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the opening of Detroit’s first-ever decorative plumbing showroom. Operating in Detroit for nearly 100 years, the company provides plumbing and lighting supplies to local plumbers, designers and contractors to support the city’s burgeoning construction community. The new 20,000 square feet showroom is located on 150 Parsons Street in Midtown.

“Advance Plumbing stuck with Detroit when a lot of others didn’t and it’s wonderful to see it flourishing and participating in our city’s comeback, thanks to the Motor City Match program,” said Mayor Mike Duggan. “The dedication of business owners like Jeff and his family are a big part of the reason we are seeing so many positive changes happening in the city.”

The fourth-generation, family-owned plumbing supply company was founded in 1920 by Henry Chemick, grandfather to current owner Jeff Moss, who operates the business with his sons, Josh and Justin. In the 99 years the company has been located in Detroit it has endured a storied history, from World War II to the construction of the lodge and the ’67 riots and now, the city’s resurgence and development boom. Advance Plumbing continues to provide its goods to designers, plumbers and contractors in the city. As the Moss’ like to say, “Advance Plumbing has gone from repairing Detroit to rebuilding it.”

“Advance Plumbing has stayed with Detroit through it all,” said Josh Moss, vice president, Advance Plumbing and Heating Supply Co. “Our history is ingrained here. Thanks to the support of Motor City Match, this new showroom enables us to bring jobs to the city, provide contractors with quality products and continue rebuilding Detroit.”

Advance Plumbing sells to a variety of consumers including local interior decorators, contractors, hospitals, casinos and plumbers. The company is a Motor City Match Round 3 awardee and received a $100,000 cash grant award to assist with opening their Midtown showroom. The business has created jobs for 10 new employees, five of which are local Detroit residents.

“Advance Plumbing’s accomplishment speaks to what Motor City Match was designed to do – support Detroiters and create opportunity and access right here in our city,” said Michael Rafferty, vice president of small business services, DEGC. “There is an abundant need for these goods, with the surge in construction happening in the city and through our pipeline of resources we’re able to assist businesses like Advance Plumbing and keep consumer spending in the city.”

To date, the DEGC’s Motor City Match program has helped to open 43 businesses across Detroit, providing $6 million in grants and catalyzing $39.6 in investment. Of the 1,150 MCM businesses, 61 percent are Detroiters and 80 percent represent minorities.
